Advanced Open Water Course – Weeknights at the Lake

Lift Bag by Chuck Gerlneuch

The Open Water Diver Course serves as your introduction to Scuba Diving.  You might think of it as your learner’s permit.  While there are a number of avenues open to new divers, we have found that a few specialty courses will give you more confidence in your diving and some important skills.  The courses we feel every new diver can benefit from are

  • Navigation – Let’s face it, knowing where you are and where you want to be would seem to be an important skill every diver should know;
  • Deep Diving – A program to give you the knowledge to begin diving a little deeper than sixty feet;
  • Limited Visibility & Night Diving – Let’s face it, there are only so many hours in the day and diving at night introduces you to a whole new world underwater; and
  • Search & Recovery – There will come a time that you drop something important or someone you know drops something important in the water.  Understanding the methods of conducting ann effective search will make finding these items easier (ask Eric about a friend’s wedding rings.)

We have designed a course that maximizes your time in the water and minimizes your time in the classroom.  It combines a home study program with review sessions and a number of dives designed to help you gain confidence and skills in a fun way.  Of course for this program to work, you must do your part; you need to complet all of the reading, watch the DVD’a and answer all of the review questions at the end of each chapter before coming to class.  However, don’t get too concerned, these materials do not take that long to complete.

The schedule for this course is as follows:

  • September 27, 2011     Classroom      6:00 to 9:30     Orientation, review, testing (they are short)
  • September 29,2011       Lake Dive       6:00 to 8:00     Navigation, Night & Limited Visibility
  • October 4, 2011              Lake Dive       6:00 to 8:00     Navigation, Night & Limited Visibility
  • October 6, 2011              Lake Dive       600 to 8:00     Navigation, Search & Relocation
  • October 11, 2011            Lake Dive       6:00 to 8:00    Search & Relocation
  • October 13, 2011            Lake Dive      6:00 to 8:00     Search & Relocation

The lake dives will be conducted at 288 Lake which is a short drive from the store.  The Deep Dive will be completed on another weekend or on an Oceanic Ventures trip.

You will need your total diving system, air or nitrox of course and a few extra items you may not have yet.  Some of those things are a safety sausage, a spool or reel and some lights.  So you can make smart purchases and not waste  money, please let your instructor or one of our staff help you aquire the right items for the course.

Tution for the course is $425.00 for Club Members or $495 for non club members.

Since you need to start reading, you will want to enroll as soon as possible.  You can download the enrollment package here or email Ann and she will send you the materials you need.

Prepare to have fun and discover the explorer in you!
