Holiday

November 16, 2023 by Eric Keibler

Mom needs your list!

It is hard to believe that 2023 is coming to a close and 2024 is right around the corner. The good thing is that the holidays are coming and it is a perfect time to outfit the divers in your family with some new equipment or some training. Or, better yet, give them an adventure as a gift so the fun continues far past the holiday.

You can think of the staff at Oceanic Ventures as your own personal Christmas or Holiday Elves. Tell us what you are thinking about and we’ll help you put together the perfect gift for the divers in you life. And we’ll even help your family come up with the perfect gift for you.

Remember, we have gifts in all price ranges and for divers and non-divers alike. If you are not sure, we also have gift cards to make mailing easy!

Oceanic Ventures Elves

Dive Mom and the staff at Oceanic Ventures is here to help you make this year a special year. So send us your list or call and we will help you find the perfect gifts. And, we’ll pull everything together for you, wrap it and even deliver it right to your door!

Memorial Day 2023

As we approach the Memorial Day Holiday, let’s remember those who fought and died for the freedom we enjoy everyday. These men and women believed in this country and paid a price to help assure that it survives. It is up to those of us here to assure their sacrifice is not forgotten and for us to do what we can to assure that freedom remains alive for future generations. We have a lot of things happening both on a local level and a national level as well as an international level that challenge our beliefs and liberty. And while we may not agree on all of the details, we all agree that freedom is important and that it is worth fighting for.

So take a moment this weekend to thank those who dreamed of being free or tyranny and established these United States; thank those who sacrificed it all to maintain that dream. And then enjoy your weekend living that dream.

Holidays

Hot-Chocolate-and-treats-all-month-sm

Join us for Hot Chocolate, treats and Scuba each day in December

Do you feel nostalgic during the holidays?  Do childhood memories come drifting into your consciousness like leaves just floating by? While the holidays are a busy time for retail salespeople, like those of us here at Oceanic Ventures, we are not immune from these random thoughts entering our minds.

When I was in college, my father started taking my brother and me to the Odessa Country Club for hotdogs and beer served in the locker room bar.  It was a time for us to just hang-out and talk.  The topics of those conversations don’t really come to mind but the time we spent together does.  I am sure we talked about a lot of things from school to the future to what things had been going on at home while I was away.

I always worked a lot during the holiday season.  In high school, I worked at a retail store, and later I worked in accounting and retail through the season.  Things were always busy.  My Father has been gone for a long time but still, when I think about the holidays, it was the peaceful moments in time that stick in my memory.

Many other memories float up this time of year.  Ann and I were married in December and have spent a lot of holidays together now.  We have been with family, friends, and especially our adopted family on the holidays.  I remember big meals and small meals, big package events and small events too.

When Ann and I first got together, I found that she loves Christmas and finding that special something for everyone.  In fact, she is more of a multiple-gift person.  Running a dive store during the holidays makes it difficult to find time to really enjoy the season but she still finds a way to surprise everyone which makes the season special for her.

This desire to find the right thing carries forward to our clients as well.  She tries to help everyone find that special something to sneak under the tree, put in a stocking or give as a gift during the season.  She says, “there is always something people would love to have, and helping their family or friends find the right thing is fun!”  I know coming from us it sounds like a sales line, but she really does enjoy helping people find the right thing.

Being in retail, the holidays are hectic and stressful.  Then there is the end of the year looming as we march through December.  Our obligations here make spending time with family and friends difficult.  Many of those friends just show up here rather than trying to find a time we can all get together outside of work hours.  It is a good thing we have a real family atmosphere and understanding friends!

Over the years, we have created a tradition of a Cozumel trip on or around our anniversary, December 3, and while it expands and contracts, people love joining us for a few days away from the hustle and bustle of the holidays at home.  It is relaxing and active at the same time.  Lots of diving with periods of downtime to reflect on life or to just unwind.  It is a fun holiday tradition for us and for our friends.

As I move forward through the years, I am sure new memories will embed in my mind and old ones will continue to float by.  I only hope that maybe, I have helped create a few memories that will float by for others I have met.  Maybe they will be bright like a sailboat in the holiday boat parade or just a glimmer illuminating the past like hotdogs with Dad.

No Jingling But Some Scuba Stocking "Stuffers"

Stocking Stuffing Ideas

It is the Christmas shopping season and if you are like me, you started noticing holiday decorations being put up in early October.  I have a hard time getting into the season before Halloween, Thanksgiving, and my Birthday.  But going into any store now, even HEB, you hear Christmas music and the trees are blinking.

One of our clients hurried over the day before Thanksgiving to do some shopping  and said “I wanted to come here to take a breath of quietness before all the rush begins.”  With that, Ann and I started thinking that maybe we all need a break from all of the constant holiday hype.  So this weekend we are offering you a break from all of this.  This is not to say that Oceanic Ventures has been taken over by Ebeneezer Scrooge but we want you to enjoy the holidays!

So, get a break from the ring-a-ling-ing, jingling, blinking, winking, and holiday singing.   There will be no bay-berry, cinnamon spice, evergreen,  nutmeg, or cookies;  ok, maybe we will have cookies or brownies.  Everyone needs a snack.   So we won’t have lights, greenery, blinking or endless Glenn Miller and Bing Crosby singing.  But we will have treats to eat and drink starting this week.  We will wrap your presents and even can arrange for delivery.  We will try our very best to have friendly and warm faces.  But the only decoration will be a very large red stocking, and maybe a wreath!

Why the stocking?

Why!  Because everyone needs a few little things to add to their diving system!  Even if your diving friend who  “has everything” there are still some little things they need.  Come by and let us help you fill up your stocking and have an adult beverage and a cookie too!

Scuba Diving Santa Visits West University Place

Santa with Leia and ZaideThis past weekend, Santa once again returned to the City of West University Place to pose for photographs underwater.  This annual event benefits the West University Parks Department and showcases Santa’s love of diving.  Santa posed with divers, snorkelers, swimmers who were adults and children.
The Oceanic Ventures Staff including, Travis Hershey, Zaide Scheib, Joel Hershey, Leia Zuczak, Coad Worden and photographer Eric Keibler, helped with the event by keeping things organized and flowing.
We had a great time and met a lot of fun people during the event.  If you missed the event, we will all be back again the second weekend of November 2017.

What I really want for Christmas is…

What I really would like to have is...

Your friends and family know what you like to do in your spare time but do they know what you would like to have or need to complete your ideal scuba kit?  Why not tell them what you really want?  You can complete a Holiday Wish list and let them know what you would like to have or really need.  These wish lists take some of the guessing out of the gift giving process and keep you from getting 3 different dive knifes to add to the one you already have.

At Oceanic Ventures, we have drafted a sample list for you to begin working with.  you can download a copy of it here.  Dive Mom has even volunteered to contact you family and let them know you really want scuba equipment and trips for the holidays and she is here to help them.  Really it is that simple!  Dive Mom has even come up with an incentive program to make it worth while for you…

Turn in your list in  with at least two people she can contact, and you will be entered into a drawing for a $50.00 Gift Card.  At least 2 will be given away during the sale running 10-12 November 2011.

Remember, if you get 3 old j-tube snorkels it is your own fault.  You really do want to complete your own scuba wish list!
