New Scuba Diving Instructors

Hear Ye, Hear Ye, Hear Ye!  Let it be known that Oceanic Ventures Has Four New Scuba Diving Instructors!

After a lot of time listening to lectures, working through a mound of homework, having special sessions, apprenticing with the staff and a great deal of stressful studying, John Davis, Joe Henry, Joel Hershey and Scuba Steve Soulen completed their Instructor Evaluation Clinic, IEC, this past weekend and are now officially Open Water Scuba Diving Instructors — well ok, once the paperwork is processed at SSI headquarters.  Their journey to this point has been a long winding road.  There were a lot of classroom sessions with me as well as pool classes and open water sessions.  During the process, they all became Dry Suit divers so they could stand the winter and early spring waters at the lake and they learned to work with troublesome students (thank you Alex Witschey and Madison Lee.)  They worked with new students and divers wanting to join Neptune again (i.e. Scuba Skills Updates).  They plowed through standards and textbooks looking for the gems that they would be tested over as well as their Science of Diving materials (the physics and physiology of diving.)
Throughout the process they maintained a positive attitude and stepped-in to help where ever they could.  Along the way, they, along with Dive Coordinator, Susan Long, came up with some awesome marketing ideas and some ways to improve the diving programs at Oceanic Ventures. All the while, Dive Mom had to remain out of their training and could not help them through the training process.  However, I think the preparation program was just as hard for Dive Mom, because she could not participate in the program nor assist them in any way.  She had to maintain her distance since she was the Instructor Certifier for the IEC.
In the end they all shined!  They completed the testing and evaluation with most of their finger nails intact and with hair on their head — well, Joel excluded.  AT about 4:30 Sunday afternoon they all knew — They passed and were now finished with their Instructor program!

Houston's First Dive Cach Ready for Scuba Crawfish Boil Weekend

David & Steve in Mexico
David Dobrowski and Steve Soulen, OVI Cache Master, in Cozumel
Oceanic Ventures, own Cache Master, Steve Soulen, announced that he will have Houston’s first Dive Cache ready for divers to discover during Wade’s Crawfish Boil and dive at 288 Lake on March 24, 2013.  If you are unfamiliar with DiveCaching it is the underwater version of GeoCaching, a sort of treasure hunt using GPS coordinates and a little detective work.  These caches are placed for others to find and discover the locations.  Inside each cache is a log for the finder to sign as well as a treat which was placed there by the last group to visit the cache.  The idea is to sign the log and then you can take something from the cache but you must leave something in it as well.
Steve will be placing the cache somewhere in 288 Lake and then posting the instructions on how to find it on the GeoCache website.  He will also monitor the cache and post the logs periodically to the website.  He has plans for placing other DiveCaches in area lakes to make the search even more fun.  Keep watching for hints to this location as well as others around Texas.

Dive Guide Open Water
It was a busy weekend!  It was an open water weekend with great results!

Saturday was Stress & Rescue day with Bubba Alex being found all over the lake without his buddy.  He seemed to find himself, stuck in the boat, laying on the bottom, panicking on the surface, running out of air numerous time.  Throughout it all, Bill, John, Mike and Chris kept dragging him back to shore and helping him get ready for his next dive.  I think they were ready to tie him up and leave him on the bottom by the time it was done.  At one point Bill turned to John and asked, isn’t this the same fool we just rescued from the boat?  Where is his buddy?  I am thinking that his buddy knew what kind of diver he was and left for the day.

Congratulations guys for putting up with us and finishing your Rescue course.

Bubba Alex & His Other Brother Madison
Bubba Alex and his other Brother Madison getting ready for a lead dive.
On Sunday, Bubba Alex and his other brother Madison showed up to go diving and the new Dive Guide Candidates were now tasked with rescuing them.  Additionally, Bill and Steve were tasked with taking them on several lead dives around the lake.  And, wouldn’t you believe it; they couldn’t stay together during those dives either!

After it was all said and done, Bill and Steve survived leading these wonderful divers around and in the process completed their Dive Guide and Dive Master programs.  And, we would like to take this opportunity to welcome Bill Fuqua and Steve Soulen to the Oceanic Ventures staff as our newest Dive Masters!  Welcome to the team!!!

New Scuba Divers

Photo of David and Morgan at hospital
Morgan Morris wtih her father David Morris

There is really something special about babies and our diving family has been expanding a lot over the past few months.  Oceanic Ventures is a family oriented dive store so we have a special appreciation for the new divers joining our diving family.  Remember it will only be a few years before they are ready for our Star Fish program and their first diving mask.  Ann is always quick to ask new parents when they will be bringing their new dive buddy to the dive store for a visit and a photo with her and maybe even “Al.”

Most recently, one our staff, David Morris and his wife Marissa brought Morgan Morris into the world. David even laughed that she was already becoming a nitrox diver because she was on elevated oxygen (i.e. nitrox) while in the incubator after her delivery.  She is still a few weeks away from her first visit here, but we are anxiously awaiting her arrival.

Another of our diving clients, Giles Adam brought his beautiful baby girl, Genevieve, who was born on 25 October, to the dive store to meet Dive Mom and to start learning where to buy her father some scuba Christmas gifts.  Giles is one of the members of  Team Ice Cold and went to Antarctica with us last March.

Ann and Eric were also priviledged to serve as God Parents for Anna Coussirat, the daughter of long time customers and friends Dan and Angie Coussirat.

It is always special when children come to visit, especially the newest member of our family.  Congratlations on the birth of your children and we really look forward to their first Star Fish class!

Changes at Oceanic Ventures

ashton last day
Ashton and Joyce – Ashton is Working Until the Last Minute

The world keeps changing and Oceanic Ventures is not immune.  After graduating from the University of Houston, Ashton, our Retail Manager, has decided to change things up a bit and move to Boston.  He is a part of our family and a part of the Oceanic Ventures family.  He is moving to Boston to be closer to Joyce, who moved up to Boston a year ago.

Ashton will still be involved with the Company as a consultant and would like to lead a few of the really cold water trips (there are not many of our staff who love ice diving); he has also agreed to help us with some other projects.

Before leaving, Ashton tried to perform a Vulcan Mind Meld with Alex and transfer much of his knowledge and experience to him.  Alex is a long-time client who has come on-board to take over some of Ashton’s duties and to keep Ann and me on-track.  Please wish him well in that task!
You will also find some other new staff working part-time in the store along with some other old friends.  Please come by and meet Alex and check on Dive Mom.  You can reach Alex by email or phone just as you can reach Ann or me via our personal email accounts and through the store’s main account at divesafe@oceanicventures.net.

Things are changing but one thing remains the same, our commitment to being your door to adventure!TM  We have a lot of exciting things happening this year including some cool travel opportunities, Club Aquarius meetings, and our all new DiverXY group.  You really have no excuse not to make scuba diving a lifetime pastime.
