Dive Site Geology in the Southern Sea of Cortez

One of the things I enjoy doing is combining my appreciation of the earth with diving. Most of the time the two things are in close juxtaposition as dive sites are often close to shore. And any time a rock exposure presents itself adjacent to the shoreline there is an opportunity to do a bit of geology before jumping into the water for a dive. Most often it’s best to be in a dive skiff which is able to get up close and personal with the rock exposure. That was the case in a recent dive trip I took with Nautilus.

Gallant LadyRecently, I was onboard the Gallant Lady, a 116′ dive yacht. The exciting ‘Orcas and Mobulas’ trip traverses the southern Sea of Cortez in the vicinity of La Paz, visiting Cerralvo Island to the east of La Paz, Espiritu Santo Island which is close and to the north of La Paz and San Francisco and San Jose Islands further north. The format for this excursion is for the boat to cruise around between the islands and the mainland looking for whales, orcas, and schools of mobula rays. And of course making visits to each of the sea lion colonies in this portion of Baja California, which some claim to be the highlight of any trip to these parts because sea lions enjoy the presence of divers and will goof around and pose for the enjoyment of their guests.

Route Map for Trip

Baja Cliff and whaleThis portion of Baja California is very arid with little rainfall, meaning that rock exposures are plentiful and commonly in the form of sheer cliffs rising out of the sea. Most of the area consists of intrusive basalts (meaning they did not erupt on the surface) that tend to be dark gray or brownish and massive (meaning they lack detail). Basalts in general are oceanic in origin because they originate in the mantle (below the continents). We can tell this because they lack silica (such as quartz which is silica dioxide) which only occurs within continental landmasses.

Espirito IslandThere were also some extrusive (meaning they erupted) ash and lava flows. This was clearly seen on the northern portion of Espirito Santo Island when we visited a sea lion colony called La Reina. Here the lowest unit (that we could see at sea level) was a light-colored ash that was covered (unconformably) by a thinnish dark brown lava flow followed by a reddish-brown lava flow, then a soil zone (seen as a thinnish light red and white layer) which was in turn covered by a massive grayish lava flow.

Divers getting readyThe only sedimentary rocks were seen on the mainland coast to the east of La Paz (across from Cerralvo Island) where recent sandstones have been uplifted from the sea due to the tectonic movement of Baja California to the northwest, angling obliquely away from the Mexico mainland. These sandstones show clear layering indicating how they were deposited. The layers sometimes change dip and truncate one another which reveal changes in flow direction. Units like this can be deposited by streams and rivers (called ‘fluvial deposits’) but these sandstones were deposited offshore when sediments carried by these rivers flowed into the sea and were dispersed.

These are just some of the examples of geologic formations found on our recent adventure. But, they are good examples of formations that surround the places we dive. I would encourage you to look beyond the mammals, fish and corals and observe the structures around us when we head out diving. There is a lot more there.

Scott Singleton
Growing up in the wastelands of New Mexico Scott was surrounded by rocks and dirt but it wasn’t until he read Jules Vern’s Journey to the Center of the Earth that he began to see them as exciting! Knowing that the trip that Jules Vern described was somewhat impossible, Scott pursued Geophysics so he could see what was under the surface without leaving his air-conditioned trailer. Receiving his Bachelor of Science from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology was the first step on his journey which continued through the oil fields of Texas, Oklahoma, and his beloved New Mexico. He later climbed higher receiving his Master’s Degree from Texas A&M University. When he isn’t looking for oil, Scott has become one of the leading experts on wood found in the fossil record in Texas. He recruited his entire family to help on these fossil hunting quests spending hours scrabbling over rocks and brush to find clues to the past. Never ones to sit still, the Singletons (Scott, Eileen and Loraine) discovered the world under the surface of the water, and all became scuba divers traveling to the far reaches of the earth photographing and videoing the underwater and surface scenes they encounter. He combines his love of rocks and fossils with his underwater adventures.

Where was your favorite dive?

Anjelica asked me where was my favorite dive. This is a question I get a lot. And the answer if not that simple. Diving is a series of moments in time and I have been lucky to have had a number special moments over the past forty years of diving. Like many divers, there is still something special about my first open water dive. No it was not somewhere exotic nor was the water particularly clear. But it was my first time to breath underwater and to see what was really there up close. My first dives were in Possum Kingdome Lake near Ft Worth and it was a cold, rainy day in March. But there was something so special about that day and that experience that I can still picture in my head today.

I remember some spectacular dives in Fiji where Ann and I spent our honeymoon. The corals were alive with color and seemed to go on forever. The While Wall remains one of my favorite dives in all of Fiji. It is a wall of blue-white corals that open in a current to feed and completely cover the wall from forty-five feet to one-hundred twenty feet. A truly spectacular sight.

Indonesia holds a lot of memories with schoold of bait fish swishing back and forth in various formations (remember that scene from Finding Nemo?) The schools of jacks and barracuda are entrancing at Mary’s Island in the Solomon Islands.

There are lots of stories but instead of only hearing mine, I would love to hear yours. Please take a moment and let me know about your favorite dives and help answer Anjelica’s question.

Solomon Islands to Reopen!

Ann and I were on a phone call with the operations manager and the sales and marketing manager for Master Liveaboards last night talking about our various travel bookings over the next few years. One of the more exciting things to come out of that conversation is the scheduled re-opening of the Solomon Islands! According to government officials, the Islands will re-open to tourism without a quarantine requirement.

The Solomon Islands Government will require that all visitors be fully vaccinated and have a negative COVID test prior to entering the country. At the present time, the United Sates is still requiring a negative COVID test before re-entering the United States.

This is fantastic news for us, This means that our scheduled Solomon Islands liveaboard trip for October is running and the boat will be in-country in time for our trip!

If you are unsure as to where in the world the Solomon Islands are located, you will find them in the Coral Triangle near Australia. You may recognize the name of the main island in the chain, Guadalcanal.

Diving in the archeligo, is very special. There are loarge schools of fish, giant Napoleon Wrasses, sharks, baracudas and jacks. But not to be outdone, there are small interesting fish, corals and nudibranchs. And let’s not forget the people. They are warm and friendly and love welcoming visitors to their island home.

If you love handicrafts, they you will be in heaven. The locals are expert carvers and jewelry makers. Often time they are even willing to barter their art for things you may have in excess like t-shirts, backpacks and flashlights.

Join us for an adventure!

We hope you can join us for a special adventure to one of the most special dive destinations in the Pacific.

Find Out More About the Adventure…

Need A Little More of a Push?

If you would like to discover more about the Solomon islands, here is a short video from a previous trip…

Cozumel – Returning Home

As I sit here listening to the waves lapping on the iron shore and here the occasional “ding” of a cylinder, it is hard to believe that we have not been to Cozumel for a year.  I have no excuse; it is only 2 hours away and the weather is purely tropical here.  We arrived on Friday and could just watch everyone’s tensions melt away as they eased into their retreat.  I love coming here, it feels like returning home.

Returning to the Presidenté Intercontinental is like visiting friends.  Many of the staff members have been welcoming me here for more than ten years.  But even if this is your first trip, they work hard to make you feel at home.

I have been coming to Cozumel since the 1978 and while it has changed and grown, the people are still warm, welcoming and happy that you are here.  The diving is both beautiful and easy.  You just jump in and drift along unitl it is time to return to the surface and then a boat picks you up.  No navigation, no pink fin of shame for not finding the moored boat without surfacing.  It is just “easy-as-squeezy” as they say in Trinidad.

It is day three of our stay here and the second day of diving.  And, the dives have been beautiful complete with turtles, spotted eagle rays, sharks and eels.  There have been schools of yellow tail snapper and large Nassau Groupers.

A trip to Cozumel would not be complete without a visit to Buchanos at Night. And, we made this our first night stop. This is a foodie restaurant at the north end of the island.   Imagine, lobster, snapper and shrimp all redefined by their world-class chef.  Couple this with specialty cocktails and a nice bottle of wine and you have a unique dining experience and one that we love to share with our guests.

The sun is setting now and the afternoon dive boat is due in shortly.  It is time to get ready for dinner and cocktails.  So, this Armchairsailor will be signing off for the day but there is more to come.
