New Scuba Diving Equipment – Ocean Positive Swimwear

Oceanic Ventures now carrying the complete line of Ocean Positive swimwear for men and women from Fourth Element.  These are suits with minimal fasteners that make them comfortable under wetsuits but stylish enough to wear when you are not in your suit.
Ocean Positive swimwear and hydroskin rashguards are made using recycled nylon from fishing nets which have been abandoned by fishing vessels having snagged on reef, wrecks etc.
These “Ghost Nets” amount to over 600,000 tonnes of lost gear every year. The main hazard is to marine life – from invertebrates to large marine mammals. They continue to fish, long after they have been abandoned, and account for countless lives. The netting, very slow to degrade, scrubs coral, creating a desolate seascape where they are dragged over the reef by shifting currents.
Now, all over the world, dive teams are removing these Ghost Nets from the wrecks and reefs, often at great depths, and bringing them up to the surface where they can be recycled and spun into nylon yarn.
Fourth Element uses fabric made from ECONYLl®, the recycled yarn, combined with Lycra® to make a line of active swimwear.
“This is a fantastic idea, [one which] demonstrates what we can, and should, do for the oceans”. ‘Her Deepness’ Sylvia Earle.
Here is a video explaining the idea behind Ocean Positive.

And, If you want to see the product in action watch this video…

New Scuba Diver Video

The other day, I had an idea to try a new video for the website.  My idea was to have a short video to add to our website for new divers to entice them to call or come-by.  Since our program is a little different, I thought a video might be a good start along with a new page focused on becoming a scuba diver.  Below is the first video I came up with.   I have also set-up the new page for a new diver that hopefully provides a little information and will entice them to call.  You can find that page here.  Please let me know what you think.

OVI Staff Party

It was a very busy holiday season this year.  Several years ago, we decided to quit competing with all of the other holiday parties and scheduled our Staff Holiday Party in January.  Well, the tradition has remained and like in those previous years, we had our Annual holiday staff party in January.  Since it is a modified pot-luck too, we get to find out how our staff cook (or don’t) and we get to have fun as a family (yes, family members are invited).  Part of the evening included a gift exchange that becomes a little competitive because you can steal gifts already opened.
It is also a time to reconnect with staff members who you may not get to see very often.  Alex Witishey and Scuba Steve Soulen came over to join in the festivities.  In fact we st around later with Zaide Scheib and Ann and talked, smoked cigars remembering the fun we had and the things that are coming up this year.
I want to thank all of our staff for their help and commitment this past year.  We are hear because of them (as well as our clients).  Here are some photographs from the staff party…

Club Aquarius Social Club – A Cuban Adventure, Diving in Castro's Garden

It is time for a new season for the Club Aquarius Social Club and to start things off with an explosion on Thursday 19 January 2017, we have the Geibel Clan presenting…

A Cuban Adventure, diving in Castro’s Garden

Eric & Holland Geibel were in Cuba last year and Holland captured some stunning images of the people, places and animals they met on their journey.  Come listen as they introduce you to diving in Cuba as they experienced it.
This will be a fun presentation for a group of committed divers who went to Cuba and came back with some fun and “typically Geibel” experiences.  The meeting specifics are:
Where:      The Black Labrador
When:        January 19, 2017, 7:00 PM
Specials:    Yes there will be some, just ask Cynthia when you arrive
Wide Angle Category Winner
Holland Geibel is a Houston based professional photographer and artist.  She grew up in Galveston and Oregon and as a Fine Arts major (with an emphasis on photography), she has always been an artist.  Her husband Eric, a Radiologist in Houston was a diver from a young age but it wasn’t until Holland arranged for her two children to dive that she became a diver.  It was inevitable that she introduced underwater photography into her diving. Since she began shooting, she has won the Oceanic Ventures Photography Contest with her images and took the best in show for two consecutive years.  Last year, she also opened a studio at the Silos on Sawyer in Houston so she had more room to paint and to sell her artwork.
