OVI Staff Party

It was a very busy holiday season this year.  Several years ago, we decided to quit competing with all of the other holiday parties and scheduled our Staff Holiday Party in January.  Well, the tradition has remained and like in those previous years, we had our Annual holiday staff party in January.  Since it is a modified pot-luck too, we get to find out how our staff cook (or don’t) and we get to have fun as a family (yes, family members are invited).  Part of the evening included a gift exchange that becomes a little competitive because you can steal gifts already opened.
It is also a time to reconnect with staff members who you may not get to see very often.  Alex Witishey and Scuba Steve Soulen came over to join in the festivities.  In fact we st around later with Zaide Scheib and Ann and talked, smoked cigars remembering the fun we had and the things that are coming up this year.
I want to thank all of our staff for their help and commitment this past year.  We are hear because of them (as well as our clients).  Here are some photographs from the staff party…

Did I mention that I don’t like to have my picture taken?
The Chef

This is a cool boz
It is cool!
Does this make me the Chef?
Joel will be happy!
These are not the droids you are looking for, Jedi business, move along
Cool, I don’t have one of these
And, you still don’t

Club Aquarius Social Club – A Cuban Adventure, Diving in Castro's Garden

It is time for a new season for the Club Aquarius Social Club and to start things off with an explosion on Thursday 19 January 2017, we have the Geibel Clan presenting…

A Cuban Adventure, diving in Castro’s Garden

Eric & Holland Geibel were in Cuba last year and Holland captured some stunning images of the people, places and animals they met on their journey.  Come listen as they introduce you to diving in Cuba as they experienced it.
This will be a fun presentation for a group of committed divers who went to Cuba and came back with some fun and “typically Geibel” experiences.  The meeting specifics are:
Where:      The Black Labrador
When:        January 19, 2017, 7:00 PM
Specials:    Yes there will be some, just ask Cynthia when you arrive
Wide Angle Category Winner
Holland Geibel is a Houston based professional photographer and artist.  She grew up in Galveston and Oregon and as a Fine Arts major (with an emphasis on photography), she has always been an artist.  Her husband Eric, a Radiologist in Houston was a diver from a young age but it wasn’t until Holland arranged for her two children to dive that she became a diver.  It was inevitable that she introduced underwater photography into her diving. Since she began shooting, she has won the Oceanic Ventures Photography Contest with her images and took the best in show for two consecutive years.  Last year, she also opened a studio at the Silos on Sawyer in Houston so she had more room to paint and to sell her artwork.

Special Smells for the Holidays

Diving is a social activity and for many of our divers, the holidays are full of social events. If you are like me, you love to cook but sometimes the smells contradict one another in your house.  This is especially true around the holidays.  To get that fresh holiday smell back into your home you can simmer some spices on the stove to make your home smell sweet for your guests.  In an article that appeared on Food 52‘s blog, Amanda Sims posted a few ideas to help you create an inviting home for the holidays.  She writes, “It’s hard to think about potpourri without sneezing; the very idea of dried husks and petals in a decorative bowl screams dust and must. Which is why many take to the stovetop method, especially during the holiday seasons…”  You can read more here.
Enjoy the holiday season and let’s go diving in the new year!

New Scuba Diving Computers

tusa-dc-solarOne of the things we looked at recently is changing some of the computers we offer in our packages and as upgrades to our packages.  Two of the new entries are the DC Solar Link and the EON Steel.

According to the website, the DC Solar Link dive computer is the next generation in TUSA’s solar-powered devices. Features include: dive log transfer to smartphone or tablet using Bluetooth® SMART technology; Solar recharging which eliminates the need to replace a battery; 4-Mix Gas support; Free-Dive Mode, and a factory-sealed and rugged design that prevents flooding.

Using Bluetooth® SMART technology, you can transfer the dive logs from the IQ1204 DC Solar Link dive computer to any smartphone or tablet with TUSA Diving LOG app. Once uploaded to your device, dive logs can be shared with your friends on social media.

This computer looks like a new Casio G-Shock watch so it can double as a sport watch.  It looks good and we believe it will be a nice addition to our line.

suunto-steelThe EON Steel is Suunto’s next generation dive computer. The intuitive Suunto EON Steel combines advanced technology with a bright color screen and customizable features and display to show clearly what you need. With heavy-duty housing, a stainless steel bezel, and user updatable software, Suunto EON Steel will dive with you for years to come. We brought one in for a client who took it on our Cozumel trip and found it easy to read especially during the dusk/night dive.  The advantage of this computer is that it can be air integrated.

shearwater-infographic-transparent-1Another computer introduced last month is the Shearwater Perdix AI.  Our technical divers are familiar with other Shearwater computers becasue they have been using them for a number of years.  The Perdix AI offers all of the same great features of the Perdix, the Perdix AI uses its large, easy-to-read screen to clearly display the tank pressure as well as your gas time remaining (GTR). The Perdix AI is capable of connecting to either one or two transmitters giving the diver the option to monitor both tanks or dive sidemount.

So, if you are in need of a new dive computer, come by and look at one of the new offerings.
