No Jingling But Some Scuba Stocking "Stuffers"

Stocking Stuffing Ideas

It is the Christmas shopping season and if you are like me, you started noticing holiday decorations being put up in early October.  I have a hard time getting into the season before Halloween, Thanksgiving, and my Birthday.  But going into any store now, even HEB, you hear Christmas music and the trees are blinking.

One of our clients hurried over the day before Thanksgiving to do some shopping  and said “I wanted to come here to take a breath of quietness before all the rush begins.”  With that, Ann and I started thinking that maybe we all need a break from all of the constant holiday hype.  So this weekend we are offering you a break from all of this.  This is not to say that Oceanic Ventures has been taken over by Ebeneezer Scrooge but we want you to enjoy the holidays!

So, get a break from the ring-a-ling-ing, jingling, blinking, winking, and holiday singing.   There will be no bay-berry, cinnamon spice, evergreen,  nutmeg, or cookies;  ok, maybe we will have cookies or brownies.  Everyone needs a snack.   So we won’t have lights, greenery, blinking or endless Glenn Miller and Bing Crosby singing.  But we will have treats to eat and drink starting this week.  We will wrap your presents and even can arrange for delivery.  We will try our very best to have friendly and warm faces.  But the only decoration will be a very large red stocking, and maybe a wreath!

Why the stocking?

Why!  Because everyone needs a few little things to add to their diving system!  Even if your diving friend who  “has everything” there are still some little things they need.  Come by and let us help you fill up your stocking and have an adult beverage and a cookie too!

Scuba Santa 2018

Travis Hershey Stars as the Scuba Santa
Santa is Waiting For You

We had a great time this past weekend with Santa underwater at the West University Recreation Center Pool!  The kids had a great time finding Santa hanging out underwater and Mom & Dad have fun holiday cards to send out.  If you are a Houstonian member or know a member, Santa will be visiting the Houstonian this weekend.  There are still some spaces so if you want to have your photo made with Santa, you need to hurry and call the member services group to set-up a time.

  • What: Santa In the Pool
  • Where: Houstonian Hotel, & Spa
  • When: 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM
  • Note: The Houstonian is a members only club so you must be a member of have a member set it up for you to have your photo made here.

On Wednesday, Santa will be at the Houston Racket Club with the Kinkaid Swim Team and the Houston Racket Club Swim Team and some of their members.

So you can see, he really gets around when he is town!

The Scuba Diving Neighborhood in Houston

Future Scuba Diver Vanessa Cleaning Windows at Merlot's Barbershop
Vanessa Cleaning Windows at Merlot’s Barbershop

Recently, I drove in the parking lot and watched Vanessa helping her Father get ready for the day’s activities.  She was working hard and having fun in front of Merlot’s Barber Shop, which is a new tenant near the Scuba store and run by master barber, Ronnie.

A New Look for the Scuba Diving Facility and Surrounding Businesses.

Oceanic Ventures has been in the same location for twenty-five years and if you haven’t been here recently, you might not recognize the building.  The West University Office Suites Building was sold last year and the new owners decided the property needed a little improvement.  So they have repainted the building, updated the lighting, put in new landscaping, and re-striped the parking lot.  This biggest change was the actual appearance of the property.  It has gone from the natural red brick facade to an updated, painted white brick.  It was such a change that one of our clients remarked that he “drove right past the building; it just didn’t look like the right place.”

A Real Neighborhood Destination For Scuba Divers and Friends

The White Building

One of the things that happened since the renovation is the addition of new businesses to the complex.  The older established businesses like Nails by Kim (and Alternations), Mr. K’s Watch Repair, Ruth’s Electrolysis, Ed Wilson (Hypnotherapy) and Republic State Mortgage have been joined by some other small businesses.  The complex now boasts eight hair salons, one barber, two tailors, three nail salons, a formal & bridal dress shop, a watch repair facility, a new watch dealer, a pet acupuncture specialist, a motivational and hypno-therapy counselor and one extra special Scuba Diving Shop.

Why are we excited about all of this activity here?  Well it means that small businesses is alive and well in Houston and are in evidence at 2715 Bissonnet.

So, fellow divers, you can come by and spoil yourself with a manicure and pedicure, get a trim and shave, have your watch battery changed (Mr. K still only charges $5.00 for most batteries in non-dive watches) and come talk about diving while looking at new dive computers all without having to move your car.  And, if you like, we have adult beverages on hand or our friends over at Tony K’s liquors across the street can help you find the right libation for your day at the complex.  And, if you are hungry, remember Pink’s Pizza is across the street!

If you have not been around for a while, come by and see us.  You might even get lucky and find Vanessa cleaning the windows and singing while she works.

Shamless Advertising – Small Business Saturday for Scuba Divers!

This Saturday, November 24 is Small Business Saturday, a program sponsored by American Express to help encourage consumers to think and act locally by shopping at local small businesses.  And, in case you are wondering, Oceanic Ventures is a small business, conveniently located right here in Houston, Texas!
Like many small businesses, we try to offer outstanding customer service, adventures tailored to your needs and programs and equipment to help you get there.  I would encourage everyone to try and patronize local, small businesses as much as possible.  Remember these are owned and staffed by people from your community.  Who knows, they may even be your scuba diving buddies.
How about some really fun specials…

  • One Day Only! – purchase a hood, and a vest and receive a free pair of diving socks in the color of your choice!

HO HO HO Merry Christmas – Scuba Santa Undwerwater

Santa & the Mittendorfs
Santa with John, Sean and Paige Mittendorf, along with a large Elf

You may not have known it, but Santa Claus is a scuba diver.  He spends his vacations in such tropical locations as Fiji, Palau, Grand Cayman and Honduras.  Since he spends so much time in the north, he sunburns easily so he took up scuba diving as a way to enjoy the islands but not get too burned.  He loves the water and really enjoys swimming with the fish.  In 2012, his goal is to begin rebreather diving.

On Saturday, he visited the West University Recreation Center pool and posed for pictures with swimmers, snorkelers and divers alike.  Santa really like receiving those wish lists underwater!

Eric Keibler served as the photographer for the event and Joel Hershey, Travis Hershey and Christiaan Khurana all helped make Santa’s visit fun and eventful.  Hopefully, they will receive a special gift from Santa on Christmas.  We would also like to thank Brittany Bakes, Julie Bickham, Rob Cantu and the rest of the West University Aquatic Staff  for all of their help in making this event a success.

If you missed this year’s photo shoot, Santa has promised to return next year for another photo session.  And remember, look for Santa while you are visiting your favorite scuba diving and tropical locations.  He will be the one in the red wetsuit.
