Steramine Sanitizer

Steramine Sanitizing Tablets

There is a lot of discussion these days about the best method of sanitizing our homes and at some point in the future, our diving equipment.

Just after Hurricane Harvey we looked into the best way to sanitize scuba equipment that was underwater in the flood. What we found was that a product we had already been using to sanitize our rebreather lungs would also work to decontaminate the equipment exposed to Harvey’s flood waters.

Now comes the next wave of concern COVID-19. In looking at the EPA’s recomendations for sanitizing our homes we find some of the same recomendation we found then — Bleach being the leading recomedation. But looking at it a little further, we find that the same product we recommended for Harvey can also be used to help combat COVID-19 in our homes and with less harmful effects than bleach solutions.

The manufacturers website states “Our tablets are used to sanitize food contact surfaces and equipment in Restaurants, Bars, Daycares, Gyms, Assisted Living Facilities, Hotels, Schools and other industries. This product fulfills the sanitizing criteria of the U.S. Public Health Service.

STERAMINE SANITIZING TABLETS are approved by the EPA and accepted by the USDA as a safe and effective sanitizer for glassware, countertops, tables, utensils, beverage equipment, frozen dessert machines, scuba equipment and any other food contact surfaces and equipment to kill:

  • CA-MRSA (Community Associated Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus)
  • Escherichia coli
  • HIV-1 (Aids Virus)
  • Listeria monocytogenes
  • Staphylococcus aureus”

The active ingredient in Steramine, quaternary ammonium, is on the EPA list of antimicrobial agents that meet their criteria for use against SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19 novel coronavirus). Steramine has a long history of use that meets the public health and regulatory criteria of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS), and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). New York lists specific products that meed these guidelines and you will find Stramine on the list.

With all of this in mind, We think Steramine is an alternative in the fight against COVID-19 and other viruses and bacteria. It is an item regularly stock.

New Products in On-Line Store

If you have not looked at the Oceanic Ventures On-Line store lately, you may have missed a few new specialty items that we added. With the continuing discomfort during the COVID-19 situation, Dive Mom has been reminding everyone she talks to that “Divers are line Cephalopods – We’re flexible; we’re adaptable; and, we’re super strong!” So, we created a new coffee mug so you can remind everyone that you will get through all of this. We have also set-aside $1.00 from the sale of each mug to donate to the Houston Food Bank for their COVID-19 relief effort.

And, since it seems everyone is at home cooking right now, we thought it would be appropriate to add an apron to the store. This will help you keep your clothes clean in your home office while you are kneading bread.

These new items are available now (on-line only.) along with some new hats. To find the products, just press the shop button in the menu.

Valentines Day Is Coming

Love is in the air… and Dive Mom want you to get a full breath of it while it is here. But being a former floral assistant, she really things that roses on Valentines Day are over priced and a bit cliche’. Instead, why not give your sweetheart something that will give him/her a hug for months to come? What does she mean you ask? Well, a new wetsuit, hydroskin full suit, hydroskin shirt or a new swimsuit will remind them of you all year!

Remember, a tight fitting suit is like getting a hug the whole time you have it on. If your sweetheart already has everything, why not try a new Greenprene suit? It is a completely new technology with no neoprene. Or, there is always the more traditional suits and hydroskins.

If your sweetheart is not a diver or has all of his/her dive equipment then think about some travel accessories (bags, packing cubes, dry bags, etc) or even some Pure Fiji Spa products.

No matter what you need to make it a special day for your sweetheart, Dive Mom and the staff and Oceanic Ventures, can help you pull it off!

And, we don not want to forget you. We have a special something for you when you buy your Valentine a gift from your favorite Dive Facility! Call, email or come by and we will have it ready for you — we will even gift wrap it for you. What could be simpler?

Happy Valentines day!

Sidemount Diving Course Starts in November 2019

If you missed David’s Club Aquarius Social Club presentation on Sidemount diving you missed a fun topic about one of the latest trends in Open water scuba diving!
There is a lot of interest in diving because of the benefits this style of diving offers.  As David explained, people have varied reasons for learning to sidemount dive.  Some of these reasons are:

  • Health – By moving the cylinders off of your back and putting them on the side, you can reduce back strain especially of you put the cylinders on in teh water.
  • Duration – You have double the gas available on a dive so your duration can be increased significantly.
  • Safety – By adding the second cylinder and the accompanying second air delivery system, you introduce an independent,  redundant system which results in more safety for the diver.
  • Buoyancy Control – Having two cylinders on the same plane as the diver, makes the entire platform more stable.  In other words, it is easier for you to master buoyancy,
  • Appearance – Ok, let’s face it, you look cool!  And you have always heard that looks are important.
  • Opens Up Extended Range and technical diving – By learning to sidemount as a recreational diver, you begin to get more comfortable with your diving and this platform is one that translates easily to extended range or technical diving.

Learning to dive sidemount is not difficult and our program is designed to get you started with your new equipment configuration and to help you begin to feel comfortable.  Of course you will need to go diving to truly internalize what you have learned.  You can look at the program applying the Diver’s Diamond:

  • Knowledge
    • Procedures and Configuration
    • Classroom Sessions
  • Skills
    • Learn how to deal with equipment
    • Swimming in a new configuration
  • Equipment
    • Need some new equipment to carry the bottles and to breath from them
  • Experience
    • Some diving needed

If you find this intriguing, come in and talk to Ann, David or me and we will be happy to fill in the blanks.  You can find the upcoming classes here or email Dive Mom to get the schedule for the next program.
