July’s Local Diving Event – Mammoth Lake

Where would you like to be right now? I am guessing that it is not at home watching YouTube videos or the video from your dive trip last year. The COVID-19 world we are living in right now is making diving a little more challenging. But you can still get wet and enjoy visiting your fellow divers albeit from 6 feet away or in a mask.

On July 18th we are headed down to Mammoth Lake in Clute (Lake Jackson area). This local lake boasts the only divable C130 in shallow depths as well as fighter jets, boats, saltalite disks, a wooly mammoth, king kong and other sites that are just waiting for you to explore.

We will have a BarBQ grill there so you can cook your favorite picnic treat or maybe bring that traditional southern picnic food — cold fried chicken! If you don’t feel like cooking your favorite southern treats, Asiels is on the lake too and they offer curbside pickup and even delivery! You can find their menu here.

If you are interested in joining us here’s what you need to do...

  • Send us an email to let us know before Friday afternoon.
  • Complete the Oceanic Ventures Event Waiver and email it back to Dive Mom
  • Complete the Mammoth Lake Waiver
  • Pick-up a cylinder and any rentals you may need
  • Pack up your car (don’t forget a tarp and your mask)
  • Meet us at the Lake at 9:00 to start diving!

Do you have any questions? Cann Eric or Ann and we’ll try and make something up (ok, we will try and get the answer for you!)

Dreaming of Costa Rica

Ah, Costa Rica…  This place has everything, diving, beaches, lush forests, coffee and lots of activities for the bubble deprived (i.e. non-divers).  When Oceanic Ventures was young we ran eight adventures in five years to Costa Rica.  At that time it was a little off the beaten path and things were a little challenging, especially for me since my Spanish is functional “border Spanish” and I have a vocabulary of a two year-old.  But we had a great time!

Diving in Costa Rica
White Water Rafting
Zip Line

It was during those early trips that we met Bill and Nadine Beard.  Bill brought diving to Costa Rica and Nadine kept an eye on Bill and ran the marketing arm of their operation and acted as a Dive Master too.  They helped us put together some truly unique adventures for our travelers including white water rafting, tours into the rain forest and hikes up to an active Volcano (you can’t get that close to it anymore – it is a safety thing you know).

All of these years later, we are still leading trips off the sidewalk and Costa Rica has so much to offer.  Picture yourself on a quiet beach with a gentle surf breaking or on a beach where big waves break with surfers riding them to the beach.  Or maybe peeking over a ridge and watching large bull sharks swim by is more to your liking.  The fun thing about Costa Rica is you can do both in the same day!  You can be diving in the morning and flying through trees in the afternoon.

And if you want to experience the true beauty of sharks, the Cocos Islands should be on your “must do” list.  In this remote island chain, there are schools of hammerheads swimming through cleaning stations and small sharks feeding on the rocky reefs.  And let’s not forget the tiger sharks always present in the distance and sometimes up close.

No trip to Costa Rica is complete without coffee.  Touring a coffee plantation is a fun way to understand this important part of the country.  And, you get to sample coffee made with different beans and different toasts while looking at the lush forest surrounding these plantations.

Enjoying Coffee

Costa Rican Gallo Pinto

As with all of my adventures you have to sample the local cuisine and nothing says Costa Rica like Gallo Pinto which is served with breakfast or lunch.  A combination of black beans, rich and spices makes this truly a Costa Rican dish.  But you will find beautiful fish dishes and fresh vegetables abound throughout the country.

So as we all think about getting back to diving, imagine lush forests, soft sand beaches and pinnacles alive with fish and you can almost be there…

New Products in On-Line Store

If you have not looked at the Oceanic Ventures On-Line store lately, you may have missed a few new specialty items that we added. With the continuing discomfort during the COVID-19 situation, Dive Mom has been reminding everyone she talks to that “Divers are line Cephalopods – We’re flexible; we’re adaptable; and, we’re super strong!” So, we created a new coffee mug so you can remind everyone that you will get through all of this. We have also set-aside $1.00 from the sale of each mug to donate to the Houston Food Bank for their COVID-19 relief effort.

And, since it seems everyone is at home cooking right now, we thought it would be appropriate to add an apron to the store. This will help you keep your clothes clean in your home office while you are kneading bread.

These new items are available now (on-line only.) along with some new hats. To find the products, just press the shop button in the menu.

Social Club Meeting Canceled for March 2020

Everything in life is always fluid and the Covid-19 pandemic is no different. This morning we had planned to go ahead and have the meeting even if it was only a small gathering. But as the day progressed so to did the situation. As such, we decided to cancel the meeting and shortly thereafter the restaurant also elected to switch from dine-in and carry out to carryout only.

We feel for the staff and their families because like us, we all need you, our clients to come in to keep us in business. Ann and I, as well as the entire Oceanic Ventures family, would like to encourage you to patronize our meeting partner, the Backstreet Cafe, by ordering at least one meal to take home and eat with your family. By doing so, you help to assure that your favorite businesses will be here when things improve. They have made it easier for you because they are offering a coupon for order over $50.00.

We are still planning on hosting next months meeting there.

Just like you, we are monitoring updates on the ever-changing situation. Please watch our websites for updates on hours and to-go offerings. – Stay well –
